The Issue

As an animal lover, my heart aches every year watching the Grand National, knowing the dangers the hurdles pose to the horses. This iconic race, held annually recently at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, UK, is a challenging and demanding event for the participants, especially the horses who are the true athletes on the field. Unfortunately, the hurdles in the race, while thrilling for spectators, can often lead to severe injuries, and in some cases, even result in the tragic loss of these magnificent animals.

Historically, the Grand National is no stranger to controversy due to the risks involved. According to statistics from reputable animal welfare organizations, over 80 horses have died in the race since its inception. This alarming figure underscores the urgent need for reform to better protect these animals.

Horses are majestic animals that deserve our respect and care, and they should not be subjected to unnecessary danger for the sake of entertainment. By removing the hurdles, the safety of the horses can be significantly improved without compromising the competitive spirit of the event.

We propose that the race organizers collaborate with animal welfare experts to redesign the race in a way that maintains its excitement while prioritizing the health and safety of the horses. Removing the hurdles would deduce the risk of injuries hugely!

The Grand National is a celebrated part of our sporting culture, but it is time for a change to ensure it does not continue to jeopardize the wellbeing of its equine participants. Let's preserve the heritage of this race while protecting the lives of the horses that bring it to life.

Please join me in advocating for a safer Grand National. Let us send a powerful message to the race organizers, urging them to reassess and modify the current race format. Sign this petition to demand action and innovation for the sake of the horses we love.
