Stop House Bill 2656: Protect Pet-Friendly Retail Spaces

The Issue

My community, like many others, has benefited from the economic vibrance spurred by animal friendly environments in small businesses and towns. The rise of dog-friendly events has brought about more opportunities for social engagement, strengthening community bonds, and ultimately nurturing our local economy. Today, we face an undue threat. House Bill 2656 seeks to ban non-service animals from grocery stores and other retail establishments. We believe that it should be left to the discretion of the individual proprietor to ensure food safety, and to let existing food safety laws address these concerns, rather than a blanket ban against all non-service animals.

House Bill 2656 undermines the value our pets bring to the community. According to the National Pet Owners Survey, 67% of U.S households, or about 85 million families, own a pet (American Pet Products Association, 2019-2020). These vast numbers contribute significantly to the economy and unity within our communities. This bill would limit our access and inclusiveness, directly affecting our engagement with small businesses and possibly hindering local owners that have enjoyed an increase of revenue from pet-related activities.

We urge our legislators to vote against House Bill 2656. Let's stand up for our pets, our rights as business owners and consumers, and the overall health of our vibrant communities. We believe in a more nuanced, individual approach to food safety that values our cherished pets and the benefits they bring to our communal spaces. Please add your voice to this vital cause and sign this petition.
