Stop Hospitals from Blocking a Safer Breast Cancer Treatment

Stop Hospitals from Blocking a Safer Breast Cancer Treatment
The Issue
Right now in the U.S., many women with early-stage breast cancer are being blocked from a treatment that could save them time, money, and pain. The treatment is called IORT (Intraoperative Radiation Therapy). It delivers a single dose of radiation during surgery, instead of making women come back for weeks of radiation afterward.
Doctors say IORT works well for the right patients. It’s already used all over the world. But in the U.S., it’s getting harder to access—not because it doesn’t work, but because it makes less money for hospitals and radiation clinics.
That’s not fair. Women should not be denied care because it earns less profit.
IORT is easier on the body, has fewer side effects, and helps women return to work and life faster. It also costs much less than traditional radiation. But hospitals and insurance companies often say no, even when Medicare already covers it. And big medical groups like ASTRO are labeling it “experimental” just because it threatens their profits.
That needs to change.
We’re calling on:
- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
- The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
- State health departments and insurance regulators
to investigate this issue and make sure profit is not coming before patient care.
If a treatment is safe, effective, and better for patients, it should be available. Women deserve to know all their options, not just the ones that make hospitals more money.
Sign this petition to say: let women choose the care that works for them. No more denying treatment just to boost profits.
