Stop Hometown Suites Hotel from becoming a homeless shelter

Stop Hometown Suites Hotel from becoming a homeless shelter

The Issue

We, the concerned citizens of Kent, WA 98032 and Des Moines, WA 98034, are opposed to the proposed plan of turning Hometown Suites Hotel into a homeless shelter. We believe that this decision will have negative consequences for our community and we urge the city officials to reconsider.

Here are some reasons why we oppose this plan:

1. Increased crime rates in an already troubled neighborhood: Studies have shown that areas with homeless shelters experience an increase in crime rates. This is due to the fact that many people who use these facilities suffer from mental health issues or drug addiction.

The bus top directly in front of Home Town Suites on Pac Hwy is a known hotspot for drug dealing. Its not uncommon to see drug deals, public sex, fights and vandalism at this bus stop. An added homeless population in this area will only contribute problems in this area and surrounding neighborhoods. Safety is a huge concern.

2. Decreased property values: Homeless shelters often lead to decreased property values in surrounding areas. This can make it difficult for homeowners and businesses to sell their properties or attract new customers.

3. Strain on resources: Homeless shelters require significant resources such as food, water, electricity, and security personnel. These resources could be better used elsewhere in our community. Retail theft at Fred Meyer as well as safety in the Fred Meyer parking lot is also a concern.

4. Lack of transparency: The decision to turn Hometown Suites Hotel into a homeless shelter is in progress without consulting with local residents or businesses. We believe that this lack of transparency is unacceptable.

We understand that homelessness is a serious issue in our community and we support efforts to address it effectively. However, we do not believe that turning Hometown Suites Hotel into a homeless shelter is the right solution. There are better suited locations.

Therefore, we urge city officials to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that will benefit both those experiencing homelessness and our community as a whole.

Thank you for your attention on this matter!
