Stop Health Net From Cutting Assisted Living Care for California Seniors
The Issue
Health Net is about to cut off nearly 3,500 low-income Californians from the assisted living care that keeps them safe.
Most are elderly, and many live with dementia — but the group also includes vulnerable seniors with disabilities and chronic illness who depend on this Medi-Cal benefit to stay out of the hospital.
Health Net's contracts with assisted living communities end October 7, and coverage stops entirely on December 31 — leaving families weeks to find a new placement, cover $5,000 to $10,000 a month out of pocket, or watch a loved one land in a nursing home, a hospital, or nowhere at all.
"There is nothing else," said Matt Johnstone, whose 89-year-old mother has dementia, according to CalMatters.
"This is going to be a disaster," warned Pauline Shatara of California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.
Justice in Aging's Hagar Dickman said Health Net's "position is it's less costly to offer no services than some services."
The California Department of Health Care Services regulates Medi-Cal plans like Health Net and can demand real plans before anyone loses care.
