SUPPORT ANTI - HATE CRIME CURRICULUM IN SCHOOLS

At alarming rates, students in New York State and across the country experience hate at school due to their race, ethnicity, religion, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or any other difference they may face.   Sadly, fellow students, at times unaware of the meaning behind their actions or words, spread words and actions of hate that cause harm to their peers.  In 2022 the US dept. of Education office for Civil Rights recorded a record number of hate crimes.

Senate Bill 5405A and Assembly Bill A410, supported by youth advocates who have experienced the damage of hate in their schools, would require anti-hate curriculum be provided by the State Education Dept. to all NY schools.   Through age appropriate curriculum, students can learn what discrimination and hate is and how to promote inclusive, safe environments for all students.   

Our students should not be exposed to derogatory terms and humiliating actions that represent years of violence and discrimination.   All students deserve to be educated through anti-hate crime curriculum to end the hate in schools once and for all.  Now is the time to act for the students of New York.
