Stop Harmful Traffic Changes in Redwood City

Stop Harmful Traffic Changes in Redwood City
The Issue
Dear Council Member,
I realize that this opinion may not be popular with everyone, but I’ve had enough. I cannot continue to watch the city I’ve called home for over 60 years continue down this misguided path. Enough is enough. That’s why I’m sending this letter today to formally express my growing concerns.
I strongly oppose the ongoing and proposed traffic-related changes being implemented across Redwood City — specifically the excessive use of speed bumps, unnecessary roundabouts, and other measures that seem to go unchecked. These decisions are not only reckless; they fail to consider the real needs and challenges faced by the general population of city residents who rely on these roadways every day.
Over the past few years, I've seen a disturbing trend where these traffic changes favor a select few living in immediate areas, neglecting those who commute daily through our streets. Not only do these modifications damage our vehicles, but they also hinder our city services from performing their jobs efficiently. Drivers are swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid these modifications; Emergency vehicles are slowed down by unnecessary obstacles, which could potentially risk lives.
According to a 2020 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, excessive use of speed bumps can increase vehicle damage and maintenance costs significantly, and the National Traffic Safety Administration warns about potential delays in emergency response due to poorly planned road changes.
For over six decades, I've lived in this community, and these changes threaten the safety and livability of our cherished city. We need to rethink these traffic decisions and develop solutions that are inclusive and considerate of all residents. A comprehensive traffic assessment should replace these haphazard changes. Solutions could include optimizing traffic light patterns, enhancing pedestrian crossing rights, and community consultations to truly capture the city's needs.
Join me in urging the Redwood City Council to pause and reassess these traffic changes. We need a plan that works for all, not just a select few. Every citizen's voice matters in ensuring our roads are safe and accessible. Sign this petition to demand change and accountability today.
