Stop Harestanes West Windfarm
The Issue
The Ae Valley, nestled in a quiet corner of Dumfries and Galloway in Southwest Scotland, is a place of natural beauty and tranquillity, cherished by its close-knit community. Scottish Power Renewables (SPR) now proposes to build 12 large-scale ‘giant’ wind turbines, each exceeding 220 meters in height, around the western edge of the valley. These turbines would be situated around 1.1 km from the nearest property and just 2.2 km from the centre of Ae village —unprecedented proximity for turbines of this scale anywhere in Scotland or the UK.
Impacts on Community and Wildlife
Ae is a haven for wildlife, including red kites, short-eared owls, pine martens, otters, and numerous species of moths and bats. The valley draws visitors year-round for activities such as walking, horse riding, mountain biking at the 7Stanes centre, wild swimming, and exploring the ancient Roman-Reivers route and historic Glenae Tower. The sheer size of the proposed turbines would dominate the area, diminishing its natural appeal and overshadowing existing wind farms in the region.
Inconsistent with Scottish Planning Policy
Scottish Planning Policy aims to promote “the right development in the right place,” balancing renewable energy initiatives with sustainable community needs. While we support renewable energy, we believe these turbines are simply too big and too close. The benefits SPR claims for the local community are minimal, with few long-term jobs expected. Sadly, developments like this are becoming increasingly common across Scotland, placing rural communities under mounting pressure to accept ever-larger wind farm projects.
Protecting Scotland’s Wild Places
This campaign is about more than just opposing one development; it’s about standing up for policies that seem to disregard the potential impact of large-scale power generation on communities. We believe that small, precious wild areas like Ae Valley belong to all of us. By preserving this tranquil landscape, we safeguard it not only for ourselves but for future generations to enjoy and cherish.
