Stop Gun Violence

The Issue

Planning for Survival

I always knew that gun violence was an issue, but I didn't realize how severe it was until one day I was watching the news with my family. I saw a recent school shooting where 21 people were killed at Uvalde Elementary School. It made me and my family think about what we would have to do if that happened to us. We started planning everything so we wouldn't have to go places with the fear that we might be next.

Children go to school every day fearing that someone is going to come and shoot up their school next. According to "The American Psychological Association," 50 percent of students fear going to school because they don't want to be the next victims of a school shooting. This inspired me to make that problem my capstone project and try to find ways that I could help gun violence stop happening so frequently.

Days so far

Did you know that there have been more shootings in the US than there have been days so far this year? This is not something that we should be proud of. Every day, people are constantly losing their lives because someone decides they want to use a gun to kill someone, sometimes they don't even know. I know this topic is a problem in our community because the most recent school shooting was on March 28, 2023. Three children were killed and three adults were injured. Though that doesn't seem like a lot, that's six families that lost their loved ones because the wrong person got hold of weapons.

Impact

The whole world is impacted, but mostly the U.S. right now because we live in the U.S., so I am focusing on the U.S. This directly impacts my community and me because, though we haven't experienced any shootings in Greenwich, we still experience grief when shootings happen. When Hundreds of people are dying every day due to gun violence that just goes to show that this issue needs to be resolved

 Getting ahold

The issue was that the wrong people got ahold of guns, and they sometimes had mental health problems or problems in general, but instead of finding help, they decided they wanted to ruin someone else's life, thinking maybe it would help their own. 100’s of people die every day people, the wrong people get ahold of a gun or guns in general, and the numbers just keep adding up to the number of people that have died because of mass shootings.

Some academic vocabulary my reader needs to know is what a mass shooting is and how it effects us. A mass shooting is mass shooting, according to "Britannica, is "a mass shooting, also called an active shooter incident, as defined by the FBI, an event in which one or more individuals are "actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area."

Gun control

The problem with my topic is that there are so many different ways that people can get ahold of guns unlicensed, that there is no way of actually solving the problem. There are ways that we can prevent more from happening, like spreading awareness and stopping the wrong people from getting ahold of weapons. I know that in Washington, DC, they made a law saying that every person from now on has to go through a background check and make sure they don't have any records of mental health issues or that they had a crime before, and also make sure that they do not have a stalking issue or have been in jail before. I believe that this is a good idea and that every state should try to do something like that as well.

 What we should do

I believe that a solution that would work in Greenwich since we have yet to have any mass shootings is still keeping awareness, staying protected, and being aware of people. If anyone has weapons in their household, they should keep them away from kids and teens, and if they have mental health issues and think of doing something that would hurt themselves or others, they should find help.

The plan

Me and my family now know that if we were to be in a situation where we have to hide we would be aware that we are trying our best to hide. If people realize how bad gun violence is starting to get, maybe they would spread awareness about how, if someone owns a gun or weapons, they should keep them away from people who might think about doing bad stuff with the gun, like killing themselves or wanting to hurt other people. To think about the fact that there have been more mass shootings than days just goes to show that this is an issue in society right now, but luckily there are ways that we can prevent it.
