The Issue

Throughout my life, I’ve encountered a recurring sentiment amongst friends, colleagues, and loved ones. The sentiment that if an issue does not directly impact them, they have no obligation to intervene or acknowledge its existence. As a result, grave injustices continue to occur unopposed. This is particularly relevant when acknowledging Israel's unjust expansions into territories under the guise of 'peacekeeping.'

Genocide might be a harsh term. Yet, the displacement and brutal treatment of Palestinians to make way for Israel's expansion certifies it as such. According to B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization, Israel's continual control and colonization of Palestinian territories have led to the uprooting of over 800,000 Palestinians since 1948. This unregulated expansion is not only a denial of people's right to self-determination, but it's also an active display of human rights breaches on a grand scale.

It is essential to note that this petition is not born from a place of hatred or bias towards a specific people but from the unshakeable conviction that human rights and international laws should not be disrespected on a diplomatic whim. We call for international bodies and countries supporting Israel's actions to critically evaluate the impacts of their support.

This story became personal to me when I realized the power behind recognizing an active injustice. Even if it's not happening in our backyard, we have the responsibility as global citizens to champion humanitarian causes. It is time for us to raise our collective voices against this gross misinterpretation of peacekeeping roles, and demand an end to the unjust expansion being carried out by Israel.
