Stop giving students homework on weekends and breaks!
The Issue
FYI: If you're having doubts about whether or not we could actually win, think about the middle school boy who got everyone in the district the Monday before Christmas off. We can absolutely do it. We are not powerless. Think about this summer with NO HW. 2 whole months where you don't have to think about school work ONCE. Let's do this! It's time to take back our free time. Sign my petition if you don't want the extra stress!
Students already spend 6 to 7 hours a day in school with only a short lunch break. Weekends and breaks should be a time to rest—but instead, we’re overloaded with homework.
Research from Stanford University shows that too much homework leads to stress, anxiety, and lack of sleep. The American Psychological Association found that students who get time to rest actually perform better in school.
Homework on weekends shouldn’t be required. At most, teachers could assign optional practice sheets for students who need extra help, study guides for upcoming tests (that don’t need to be turned in), or long-term projects—but nothing should be due during weekends or breaks. This allows students to rest while still having the resources to succeed.
We’re not asking to avoid learning—we’re asking for balance. No required homework on weekends or breaks would give students time to recover, improve mental health, and return to school ready to succeed.
Sign this petition to support a healthier, more balanced school environment.
