I have been a resident of Jersey City, NJ for nearly a decade. Over the years, I've watched our community transform into what feels like a smaller Manhattan. While development can bring positive change, it has also led to gentrification and the loss of affordable housing options for many long-term residents.

Jersey City is home to diverse communities who contribute to its rich cultural city. However, as luxury condos rise and rents skyrocket, many are being pushed out of their homes. According to data from Zillow, in the past ten months of 2023, rent prices have increased by 6.6% alone. Rent prices in Jersey City have increased by over 30% in the past ten years that I have lived here.

Gentrification without proper safeguards results in displacement of residents and threatens the diversity that makes our city unique. It's time we take action to protect affordable housing options for all residents.

We call on local lawmakers to implement policies that will discontinue gentrification and preserve affordable housing units in Jersey City. This includes stronger rent control laws requiring developers to include affordable units in new projects, and increased funding for public housing.
