Stop genetic animal testing to make 'glowing rabbits'!

The Issue

Last week, a scientist with the Los Angeles Project discussed a heartbreaking study- genetically mutating rabbit embryos DNA...to make them glow. Again.

Josie Zayner wants to create the next generation of pets. “I think, as a human species, it’s kind of our moral prerogative to level up animals,” she says. The Los Angeles Project is all about making animals that are “more complex and interesting and beautiful and unique” than ones that currently exist, Zayner says.

According to Zayner, it has developed novel hormone and antibody treatments to get the rabbits making lots of viable eembryos. They've also partnered with farmers to harvest embryos from animals heading for slaughter. “We can get like 10,000 embryos a week,” she said. "I just want to be treated the same way as everyone else. Humans kill like 70 billion chickens per year. Scientists also kill animals on a scale that’s just insane to get embryos."

She has been seen in social media groups looking for breeding age rabbits. Breeders selling in social media groups typically do not provide the proper standard of care and the vicious cycle continues with every new litter born.

The rescue world is struggling to keep up with the influx of 'designer breeds' being neglected, dumped, or repeatedly bred by backyard breeders. These extreme breeds, as with any species, are plagued with a litany of painful lifelong painful issues. Lops with narrow ear canals, dwarfs with malocclusion, rexes with chronic sore hocks, what kind of health issues will genetically altered rabbits suffer with? With the rate that domestic rabbits are released, could this cause an environmental issue?

This experiment was completed in both 2000 and 2013. How many more times do we need to do this? In 2025, we should be moving away from animal testing and experimenting.

There is no FDA regulations regarding 'biohacking' animals, and we need your help to put an end to this asinine money grab.
