Stop gatekeeping AccessAbility Support funds on PEI

Stop gatekeeping AccessAbility Support funds on PEI
The Issue
The Government of Prince Edward Island (PEI) AccessAbility Supports Program, service delivery and funding model discriminates against people with disabilities and Autistic adults specifically.
The current process discriminates against Autistic Islanders by being vague, abstract, difficult, ambiguous, inconsistent, tedious and careless.
The current model is condescending and exhausting. Fighting to get access to approved funds that were determined by a completed assessment process.
We have been told by many Islanders they had to fight, are currently fighting, or gave up the fight to fund supports in the current system.
The program treats Autistic adults as though we cannot manage our own affairs and make decisions for ourselves.
The current service delivery model creates barriers and places the burden solely on the person with disability to prove each and every support is justified and fits into an opaque policy of approval.
Why do people with disabilities have to fight for their rights and access to approved funds to support their lives?
We believe people with disabilities are capable of managing their approved funds themselves and to determine supports for their physical and mental well-being and should be treated with dignity.
Islanders living with disabilities should be given their approved funds directly every month without delay or barriers.
We know ourselves best and should be given the respect to decide what is in our best interests. Including how, when and where to use the approved funds for our lives.
We are calling on the PEI Government and Premier Dennis King, to adopt a more streamlined and dignified process for AccessAbility Support funds.
