The issue

In my role as the founder of Pup Dates, a Sydney-based dog events and community business, I've dedicated myself to fostering social connections through our beloved canine companions. But too often, I witness the heart-breaking reality of people being excluded from community life because they don't own a car. Whether it's missing out on a local dog-friendly event, struggling to reach a veterinary clinic, or simply wanting to enjoy a sunny day at a park, the lack of legal and reliable transport options for dogs and their owners is glaring.

Our public transport system doesn't currently accommodate dogs, a policy that puts non-car owners at a significant disadvantage. It’s a policy that inadvertently leads to social isolation, undermining efforts to build cohesive communities where everyone, regardless of transportation options, is included.

Allowing dogs on public transport could be transformative. In cities like New York, London, and countless others around the world, owners and their pets enjoy the luxury of hopping on a train or bus with relative ease. Why should Sydney be any different? This simple change could open doors, allowing dog owners to travel freely, and engage fully in the vibrant life Sydney has to offer.

Statistics from other cities suggest that allowing dogs on public transport can be managed safely with minimal disruption. For instance, Transport for London permits dogs on all their services, reporting positive feedback and rare incidents. With a population living increasingly without car ownership and the positive health effects pets confer on their owners, it's high time Sydney embraces a more inclusive approach.

I propose implementing designated areas for pets on trains and buses, potentially along with designated pet-friendly times, to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers. This approach balances the needs of pet owners with those of non-pet owners, maintaining harmony and efficiency in public transport.

In persuading decision-makers to revise the policy, your support is crucial. Together, we can advocate for a more inclusive and accessible Sydney, where every community member has the fair opportunity to participate in life’s many joys with their four-legged friends by their side.

I urge you to sign this petition in support of changing this exclusionary policy. Let's make Sydney a more accessible and dog-friendly city for everyone.
