Stop Florida’s Proposed Loyalty Oath for Public School Teachers

Stop Florida’s Proposed Loyalty Oath for Public School Teachers
The Issue
A proposed bill in Florida (HB 147) would force public school teachers to take a loyalty-style oath—not just to the U.S. and Florida Constitutions, but to uphold values like "nonpartisanship" and “serve as a positive role model… so help me God.” This may sound benign on the surface, but it sets a dangerous precedent.
Teachers already operate under strict contracts and professional codes of ethics. They are held accountable by school boards, state standards, and certification rules. Mandating an oath like this—especially with vague, politically loaded language—raises urgent red flags for freedom of speech and professional autonomy.
Florida is already facing a worsening teacher shortage. Instead of addressing issues like low pay, lack of resources, and burnout from political interference, this bill distracts from real problems by questioning educators' patriotism and professional integrity. Many teachers already work far beyond their contracted hours, often without pay, driven by deep dedication—not coercion.
Forcing educators to swear to be “nonpartisan” in today’s politically charged climate risks chilling their ability to teach honestly about history, government, and social issues. And for those with diverse faiths—or no religious affiliation at all—the final line, “so help me God,” feels like a violation of personal freedom, especially in public institutions.
This isn’t about improving education—it’s political theater, and it puts students, teachers, and democracy at risk.
We call on Rep. Tom Fabricio and all members of the Florida Legislature to immediately withdraw HB 147 and stop using our classrooms as a testing ground for political loyalty pledges. Instead, invest in what teachers actually need: support, respect, and freedom to do their jobs with integrity.
Sign if you believe our teachers deserve trust—not tests of loyalty.
