Stop Florida's Property Tax Elimination – Protect Renters and Working-Class Residents!
The Issue
Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed eliminating or rebating Florida’s property taxes—a move that may seem helpful on the surface but will actually deepen inequality, inflate housing costs, and burden those already struggling to make ends meet.
As a lifelong renter, I urge you to understand how dangerous this proposal truly is. Here’s why we must oppose it:
❌ It Only Benefits the Wealthy
This policy rewards those who already own property—people who qualified for mortgages or had enough assets to buy homes outright. Renters, who make up a significant portion of Florida’s population, will see no benefit.
Landlords won’t pass these savings on. Instead, they’ll keep more profits while renters continue paying high costs just to survive. Meanwhile, homeownership remains out of reach for people like me.
🏚️ It Encourages Neglect of Abandoned Properties
Property taxes are one of the few tools we have to hold negligent property owners accountable. Eliminating them allows the wealthy to sit on distressed and abandoned properties without consequence.
For low-income residents, tax-default auctions are often the only path to homeownership. Without that system, these forgotten homes stay empty—and so do our dreams.
💸 It Shifts the Burden to Those Who Can Least Afford It
The State of Florida still needs revenue. If property taxes disappear, the state will make up for it elsewhere—likely through sales taxes, service cuts, or new fees that disproportionately impact non-homeowners and the working class.
📢 What We’re Demanding
We, the undersigned, call on Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers to reject the proposal to eliminate or rebate property taxes.
Instead, we urge you to prioritize affordable housing, tenant protections, and economic policies that benefit all Floridians—not just those already in positions of privilege.
Add your name if you believe in a Florida where working-class residents and renters have a real chance at a future—not just a lifetime of rent and rising costs.
✅ Sign now to protect our homes, our communities, and our future.
