Advanced Placement (AP) courses are the backbone of many students' college applications. AP U.S. History, in particular, prepared me for college-level coursework and offered a nationally recognized standard of excellence that colleges respect. For all students in Florida, I want the same opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of American history through the lens of a rigorous AP course.

Unfortunately, the state of Florida is proposing to replace AP U.S. History with an alternative curriculum, the FACT course, developed by the state. While I acknowledge that states have the right to develop their own curriculum, it's crucial to maintain courses that provide students with a comprehensive, unbiased understanding of history. AP U.S. History has a long-standing reputation for offering a balanced perspective, shaped by experts and educators from a diverse array of backgrounds, reflecting the rich complexity of our national story.

Replacing this course could undermine the quality of education our students receive. College-bound students rely on AP courses not only for the rigorous preparation they provide but also for the college credit they can earn, which helps reduce future educational costs. Graduating with fewer college credits due to the unavailability of AP courses can cause significant financial strain on families and limit opportunities for students aspiring to higher education, especially for students going to schools out of state .

Furthermore, the replacement of AP U.S. History could have far-reaching impacts beyond academics. It may affect college admissions as schools nationwide are familiar with the AP standard when evaluating applications. The FACT course, lacking such widespread recognition, could put Florida students at a disadvantage.

We need to urge the Florida Department of Education and the state government to reconsider their decision to replace AP U.S. History with the FACT course. By maintaining AP courses, we ensure that our students have access to the educational opportunities they deserve, opportunities that shape informed, thoughtful, and competitive members of society.
