The Issue

In the vibrant city of Mysuru, Karnataka, the beauty of our natural environment is under threat. As someone who calls this city home, I'm deeply concerned about the recent initiatives that prioritize construction over conservation. Across Mysuru, numerous trees are being cut down to make way for towering statues and other infrastructure developments, disregarding the vital role these trees play in maintaining ecological balance and enhancing our quality of life.

The lush greenery of Mysuru has always been its soul, attracting visitors and residents alike to revel in its natural splendor. Trees provide essential benefits such as air purification, habitat for wildlife, and shade that cools our surroundings. Yet, these benefits are being sacrificed for monumental structures that, while culturally significant, can coexist without compromising our green spaces.

Deforestation for development is not a sustainable path for our future. Studies show that urban areas with substantial tree cover have lower pollution levels and healthier populations. According to a report by the World Health Organization, increasing green spaces in urban areas can reduce mortality and improve mental health. We do not want Mysuru to be stripped of its environmental treasures in exchange for concrete and statues alone.

I urge local authorities and decision-makers to reassess their development plans, ensuring they include strategies to conserve our trees and prioritize green alternatives. Alternatives such as building around existing trees or creating designated park areas could preserve our unique environment while accommodating new constructions. Additionally, implementing a robust reforestation plan could counteract any necessary tree felling.

We need your support to ensure that Mysuru remains a haven of greenery and cultural heritage. Join me in calling on the local government to adopt sustainable development practices that honor both our environment and our cultural symbols. Let us embrace a path that respects Mother Nature and her contributions to our community's well-being.

Destruction of Nature in Elwala, Mysore

A great tree that gave life, shade, and hope has been cut down. If the revered person, in whose honor a statue is being built, were alive today, he would be heartbroken to see such disrespect towards nature. This act reflects how far our values and compassion for the environment have fallen. Let us unite to protect what little remains before it is too late
