The Issue

The Farmville Area Restaurant & Hospitality Coalition, representing local restaurant owners, hospitality professionals, and small business leaders, putting Farmville First and expresses deep concern regarding the proposed increase in the meals (food) tax from 7% to 8% by the Town of Farmville.

This issue extends far beyond any single business. It directly affects the financial well-being of our residents and the sustainability of our local economy. Many families in our community are already managing tight budgets, and this additional tax burden will further strain those living paycheck to paycheck.

While we recognize the importance of municipal revenue, increasing the meals tax is a regressive approach that disproportionately impacts lower- and middle-income households. Dining—whether at a local restaurant or ordering takeout—is not a luxury for many, but a practical part of everyday life.

Our local restaurant and hospitality industry plays a critical role in Farmville’s economy. We create jobs, support local suppliers, contribute to tourism, and provide gathering spaces that strengthen our community. As business owners, we work hard to keep prices fair and accessible. A tax increase of this kind makes it more difficult to remain competitive and risks discouraging customers from dining locally.

The broader consequences of this increase cannot be ignored. Higher menu prices may lead to reduced customer traffic, which in turn could force businesses to cut employee hours, delay hiring, or in some cases, close their doors. When small businesses suffer, the entire community feels the impact—from lost jobs to reduced economic activity.

We respectfully urge the Town of Farmville to explore alternative, more balanced revenue solutions that do not place undue burden on residents or threaten the viability of local businesses.

This petition is a call to action for all who care about the future of Farmville. The public hearing on April 8, 2026, at 6:00 PM provides an opportunity for our community to come together and make our voices heard.

By signing this petition, you stand in support of:

Protecting local businesses
Supporting working families
Promoting fair and responsible fiscal policy
We ask our Town leaders to prioritize the people and businesses that make Farmville strong.

Sign this petition to oppose the meals tax increase and advocate for a more thoughtful, equitable approach to our town’s financial future.

Your voice matters—and together, we can make a difference.
