Stop Factories Polluting Beaches, Air & Residential Area 24x7 in Mukka, Dakshina Kannada

The Issue

Local residents of 8-10 villages, Mukka, Sasihithulu, Halenyangadi, Mithrapatna of Mangalore City, Surathkal, the local fishing community and patients, staff and students of Srinivas Medical College & NITK, Surathkal, continue to suffer the stench, pungent toxic odours, smokes of poisonous gases and water pollution caused by the fishmeal factories in Suratkal, Sasihithilu-Mukka area. These beaches and ocean are polluted because of these 03 fishmeal factories - Mukka Proteins Limited (formerly known as Mukka Seafood Industries) www.mukkaproteins.com Bawa Fishmeal Industry www.bawafishmeal.com and HKA Bawa (All 3 located just 50-80 feet from the ocean and beach) located in a residential area violating CRZ.

There are more than 10,000 people living in 5-10 km radius of these 3 factories (operating 24 hours). The authorities have not taken any action despite repeated complaints to the DC's office and KSPCB (Karnataka State Pollution Control Board), submitted collectively by the local residents, staff, patients and students of Srinivas Medical College.KSPCB has issued several show-cause notices to the factories but the pollution from the industry continues unabated. The air is made poisonous with the emissions released into the air include SOx, NOx, CO and particulates from boilers. Air emissions contain dimethylamine, trimethylamine and some hydrogen sulphide.

The pollution is so bad that it remains in the clothes of public and remains even after washing several times. Boilers are located right next to homes of residents and fisherfolk. Incase of any machinery malfunction or boiler bursts, many people will lose their lives. This area where these factories are expanding their operations, is not a Industrial SEZ and located right next to houses, operating 24x7 affecting the health and lives of general public.

The noise emanating from the industry is very loud and disturbing and causes great disturbance to the residents. The discharge of effluents into the sea is literally killing the entire ecosystem. There are dead aquatic animals like eels, sea turtles, crabs, fish on the beach because of the high levels of water pollution. The local fisherfolks won't be able to sustain their livelihoods for long with the rising levels of pollution because of the waste water from these factories being released into the sea. Trucks and Large Carriers with rotten stale fish waiting to enter these factories, are parked along the narrow residential area roads and beach. Local residents, staff and patients in the nearby hospital and students of NITK Surathkal and Srinivas Medical College have to inhale these poisonous gases on a daily basis; some have complained that there is sticky black substances falling from the chimneys onto clothes and skin, all this impacting people's health and well being.

There have been few articles in the local newspapers about the pollution by these factories in this area but yet no action has been taken. Please click on these links to read the articles:

Visitors and Tourists to this area will have to bear these foul odours while visiting famous local temples and beaches. There are many water sports and surfing centers which will be affected by the rampant pollution and tourists will not visit or enjoy the water sports either. These factories carrying out a prohibited activity in a CRZ region, are causing complete degradation of the environment and making it impossible for people to reside in the neighbourhood.

Therefore, request you to extend you support by signing and leaving your comments in this petition so that we can share it with the local administration to help save the marine ecosystem, to save the livelihoods of local fishermen, to save the beaches and to save local residents, staff, students, patients of the colleges and hospital from the ill effects and dangers of these polluting factories.
