Elite American universities are being strong-armed—financially—by the federal government. And it’s not about policy anymore.

It’s about money. A lot of it.

President Trump has personally demanded that top schools like Harvard, Columbia, and UCLA pay hundreds of millions of dollars in exchange for restored federal funding—money they depend on to conduct lifesaving research, support students, and maintain academic excellence.

This isn’t normal negotiating. Critics across the political spectrum are calling it what it is: extortion.

Columbia was told to pay $200 million in the middle of a settlement process. UCLA is now being asked to fork over $1 billion. And Harvard is facing a $500 million demand after initially suing the government over its demands. Some of that money goes to workforce programs. Some goes to the federal treasury. But none of it comes from transparent or legal due process.

Universities are being pressured into compliance under threat of losing critical research and grant funding—and with little room to push back. The White House has shifted what started as investigations into campus antisemitism into a political and financial squeeze on schools it sees as “too liberal.”

This campaign risks academic freedom, public trust, and the very future of higher education. Universities shouldn’t be forced to pay to keep their independence—or to avoid political retaliation.

We’re calling on:

President Trump: End the practice of demanding massive financial settlements from universities to enforce policy.

Members of Congress: Launch an immediate investigation into how these demands are being set—and whether they violate ethics laws.

This is about more than elite schools—it’s about whether our public institutions can survive political interference and financial intimidation.
