Stop Exploiting Our Right to Water –End Infrastructure Charges on any New Water Connection

The Issue

Water is not a luxury.
Water is a basic human right — yet in today's India's Delhi, getting a simple water connection can cost lakhs of rupees. Why? Because of outrageous and unjust "infrastructure charges" demanded by authorities.

They say, if your plot is above 200sqm, you should pay infrastructure charges which cost many many lakhs of rupees. Astonishing , right?

How can a middle-class family, already struggling to survive under the weight of inflation, job insecurity, and rising living costs, afford such an amount just to access water? If someone does not have money to pay such arbitrary charges, will he not get water?
This is not just unaffordable — it is inhumane.

When the government is already charging monthly water and  sewer charges, why is there a need to demand additional "infrastructure charges" that stretch into the lakhs of rupees? What infrastructure are we really paying for, and where is this money going?

We are not asking for a luxury service.
We are asking for water — a necessity for life, health, and dignity.

This policy is a cruel, regressive, and dictatorial burden on honest, working-class families. It widens the gap between rich and poor and turns something as basic as clean water into a privilege for the few rather than a right for all.

If a person got a plot from his father, of size more than 200sqm. Why he should pay lakhs of rupees for a basic water meter. How can someone afford water then. Was it his fault that he has plot size of 200sqm, should he be exploited for it.

A middle class person saves money bit by bit, paying lakhs of rupees for such arbitrary charges gives him mental pain and financial burden. We are paying water bill for it, we are not using water for free. Due to this issue , many are left without water connection. Do the government even think that how can the middle class pay such a high amount for just basic life necessity like water.

We demand:

  • Immediate removal of infrastructure charges on any new water connections whether commercial or domestic in Delhi.

We will not stand by silently while our rights are sold off.

We are citizens, not customers of a monopoly.

We are voters, not voiceless.

Sign this petition if you believe water should be affordable and accessible to all — not just those who can afford to pay a ransom for it.

Let’s raise our voices until they can’t be ignored.
Let’s remind them: Water is a Right, Not a Revenue Stream.
