Stop Excessive Plastic Packaging in B.C. Grocery Stores

Stop Excessive Plastic Packaging in B.C. Grocery Stores
The Issue
I support efforts to reduce plastic waste, but something doesn't add up: here in B.C., we're banned from using plastic or compostable shopping bags — yet grocery stores still sell most items, like produce and baked goods, in layers of plastic packaging.
As a result, my recycling bin is now fuller than ever. The burden has been shifted entirely onto consumers, while retailers and manufacturers continue their wasteful practices without accountability.
This petition asks the B.C. government, Western Family (Save-On-Foods), Sobeys, and Loblaws to reduce excessive plastic packaging at the source. That means:
- Setting packaging limits for suppliers and retailers
- Expanding bulk and unpackaged options
- Requiring truly recyclable or compostable materials — with the infrastructure to process them
- Holding corporations accountable for their packaging waste
We need consistent, upstream solutions — not token changes at the checkout counter.
