STOP "Every 15 Minutes" AT HIGH SCHOOLS starting with WEST CAMPUS

STOP "Every 15 Minutes" AT HIGH SCHOOLS starting with WEST CAMPUS
The Issue
We are writing with regard to the Every 15 Minutes program that was held at West Campus on March 23 and 24, 2023.
* We are in support of evidence-based programming that increases the West Campus community’s safety and well-being.
* Every 15 Minutes has been around for many years, but there is no evidence indicating that participation in this program successfully leads to prevention of drunk driving. https://www.topic.com/the-teens-who-play-dead-to-save-lives
* Many parents at West Campus describe that this program was upsetting and even traumatic for their child and, in some cases, for the parents as well.
* Parents were notified that the program was taking place once it was already underway so did not have the option to opt their child out of the program.
Requests for future:
* Do not bring the Every 15 Minutes program to West Campus again.
* Communicate with parents in advance with a detailed explanation of any programming that might trigger a strong reaction in the child and allow them to opt their child out if the parents deem the program is not a good fit for their child.
* Convene a committee including parents, teachers/staff, administrators, and students to research options for future evidence- based programming that promotes safety and well-being of the West Campus community and addresses topics including safe driving (avoiding substance use and texting while driving), mental health, school safety, and more.
We request that Principal McMeekin respond to the above requests in writing by Monday, May 22.
