Stop euthanasia against autistic and IDD children in the Netherlands

Stop euthanasia against autistic and IDD children in the Netherlands
The Issue
As an autistic American, living under the shadow of ableism perpetuated by figures like RFK Jr., I am deeply disturbed by the reports of euthanasia being applied to autistic and intellectually developmentally disabled (IDD) children in the Netherlands. This issue transcends borders and demands our immediate attention and action.
Last month, a 16 year old boy suffering from autistic burnout was euthanized in the Netherlands. This was somehow legal.
Euthanasia should never be a solution for disability. Autistic and IDD children deserve value, respect, and the chance to live their lives with dignity and support. The Netherlands, a nation known for progressivism, must uphold its reputation by giving every child the protection and opportunities they deserve, regardless of their neurological differences.
Medical institutions are calling these children 'sufferers', opting for finality when they should explore all avenues of support and inclusion instead. This represents a grave misunderstanding of what it means to be autistic or IDD. Autistic spectrum disorders and IDD must be understood, not feared. These children need empathy-driven care rather than being seen as burdens to society.
The practice of euthanasia under these circumstances not only undermines the basic human rights of these children but also the trust we place in our medical and legal systems to protect the most vulnerable among us. According to research from the National Libary of Medicine, there are numerous cases where pressure was applied to opt for euthanasia due to an inability to accommodate these children's needs.
I urge the international community and human rights organizations to speak up against this practice. Let us petition the Dutch government to reassess their policies concerning euthanasia and to specifically protect autistic and IDD children. Our aim should be the enhancement of their lives, not the abrupt termination.
Together, we can demand a world where every child is valued and cherished. Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with those who do not have a voice in these crucial conversations. Let us protect the innocent and ensure a future where disability is met with understanding, care, and inclusion rather than despair and termination. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference in their lives.
