The Issue

History is not a political issue—it is a record of truth that must be preserved for future generations. The recent removal of references to transgender activists, LGBTQ+ historical figures, and key events from National Park Service (NPS) websites is an unacceptable act of historical erasure.

The Stonewall Uprising was a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, and activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera played an essential role. Yet, their contributions have been diminished or erased from NPS websites. Similarly, pages dedicated to influential figures such as Pauli Murray and important LGBTQ+ historical sites have been removed or altered. This censorship, whether intentional or careless, threatens the integrity of our shared history.

The mission of the National Park Service is to educate and preserve history for all Americans. By erasing LGBTQ+ history, the federal government is actively making it harder for the NPS to fulfill this duty. LGBTQ+ history is American history. The removal of these records sets a dangerous precedent—one that seeks to rewrite the past rather than accurately reflect it.

We have to demand that the National Park Service restores all removed LGBTQ+ historical content, reinstate accurate terminology, and commit to preserving the full truth of our nation's history. We must ensure that the rich and diverse history of LGBTQ+ Americans is acknowledged, respected, and preserved for generations to come. Sign and share today!!!
