Stop Eradication of Lahontan HMA Wild Horses

Stop Eradication of Lahontan HMA Wild Horses
The Issue
The Lahontan wild horses are a treasured symbol of freedom and the enduring spirit of the American West. Consisting of tight family bands, these magnificent creatures are loved by the local community. The decision to remove the majority of this herd, reducing them to only 7 to 10 remaining horses, threatens their very existence and the cultural heritage they embody. Eradication on such a scale will spell disaster for these beautiful animals, effectively wiping out a herd that has roamed freely and formed a unique part of the ecosystem.
The Environmental Assessment (EA) clearly indicates that the preference for cattle grazing in the area is influencing this drastic decision, which undermines the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. This act intended for any necessary livestock reduction to precede the removal of wild horses. The Record of decision does not mention the removal of livestock to restore ecological balance and meet management objectives.
The AML of of 7 to 10 Wild Horses will lead to genetic conserns as it is scientifically proven a herd that small can not be genetically viable. The final EA covers up these facts by referring to the NAOS recommending decreasing the number of wild horses but does not refer to the number that should be left.
Removing this herd underscores a concerning deviation from legal mandates intended to protect these animals and constitutes a failure to prioritize the management of our public lands responsibly.
Each band of these wild horses represents generations of adaptation to their environment, valuable both environmentally and culturally. Eliminating the majority of the Lahontan herd would erase this legacy and ignore the ecological role they play in the biodiversity of the land.
We call for a reconsideration of the current plan to eradicate this iconic herd. Let us prioritize a balanced approach to managing public lands such as the majestic Lahontan horses and sustainable agricultural practices. Please sign this petition to protect them and ensure their legacy continues for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
