Stop energy suppliers ripping off UK businesses

The Issue

To the UK Government:

We, the undersigned, are calling for a new regulator to be created solely for the UK non-domestic energy market. OFGEM is not fit for purpose in this market and has failed to protect businesses from unfair practices by energy suppliers and brokers.

Specifically, we are calling for the following:

●     Regulation of energy supplier standing charges. Standing charges are a fixed fee that businesses pay each month, regardless of how much energy they use. These charges can be very high, and they are not transparent. This means that energy suppliers can seemingly charge whatever they want for standing charges.

●     A ban on the mis-selling of energy pass-through contracts. Energy pass-through contracts are contracts where only/mainly the wholesale price of energy is fixed. These contracts can be very risky for businesses, as they can see their energy bills rise sharply if non-commodity prices go up. We believe that these contracts should be banned, or at least heavily regulated.

●     Energy contracts that are “out of contract” or “deemed” should better reflect the wholesale market conditions and suppliers should not punish customers who choose not to, or who are unable to enter into a fixed term contract.

We believe that these changes are essential to protect businesses from unfair practices in the non-domestic energy market. We urge you to take action and create a new regulator that will hold energy suppliers and brokers accountable.

●     The number of pubs shut down for good total 400 in the first half of 2023 – the same as the WHOLE of 2022. Just a small part of ONE sector!

●     Energy price hikes are directly impacting inflation and higher prices are passed on to consumers.

●     The regulator OFGEM currently, poorly manages and concentrates on the domestic energy market – where they have effectively created a government mandated energy pricing tariff/structure
