The Issue

As a retired army veteran living on a fixed income, I have dedicated my life to serving our country with honor and integrity. It is disheartening to find that amidst economic challenges, I am facing outrageous energy cost increases that strain my finances and quality of life. Just recently, I was hit with a $100+ hike in my energy bill, pushing my total to over $300, when just months ago it averaged around $200. This dramatic surge in energy rates is not only unjust but unsustainable for many individuals and families who are already struggling.

Energy is a basic necessity needed for heating our homes, cooking our meals, and living with dignity. For many of us on fixed incomes, including retired veterans, seniors, and low-income families, the unchecked rise in energy costs is unbearable. It is time to demand change and hold those responsible accountable for these drastic rate hikes.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average U.S. residential electricity customer paid 13.15 cents per kilowatthour in 2020, which rose to 13.93 cents in 2021. In some regions, rates have risen even higher, disproportionately affecting rural and underserved areas. If steps aren't taken, we're likely to see further increments that could devastate millions of households.

We call upon energy service providers and regulators to impose an immediate halt on further energy rate increases and to initiate serious discussions to reduce the cost of energy services. Transparency in billing and implementing subsidies or assistance programs for those in need can make energy more affordable and ensure that everyone, regardless of their income or background, can afford this essential utility.

Join me in demanding fair and just energy pricing by signing this petition. It's time for us to stand together and reclaim our power—both literally and financially. Sign the petition today to make a vital difference for us all.
