Stop 'Embarrassing' Stonehenge
Why this petition matters
On 30 May 2022, English Heritage displayed eight photographs of Queen Elizabeth II, who's also the Head of the Church of England onto an ancient, pre-Christian monument.
Stonehenge is one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks dating back to the year 2500 BC, and has also long been regarded as a site of pagan ceremony, even to this day, continues to draw thousands to the site to celebrate the spiritually significant summer and winter solstices for the summer and winter solstices, when the central axis of the megaliths aligns with sunrise and sunset, respectively.
In England, Rollright Stones in The Cotswolds and Castlerigg in the Lake District. In Wales, Druid’s Circle in Penmaenmawr and Callanish Standing Stones, Isle of Lewis in Scotland, all have thought to been built as a public community space for rites and rituals. In recent excavations of human bodies suggest Stonehenge could have been used as a similar archaeological site too.
This light display was clearly done by people who knew what they were doing. Stonehenge is a religious site that aren’t the queen, that’s the problem. It is a place of pre-Christian cultural relevance and important to people who claim a spiritual connection with pre-Christian religion, or who just revere it as a significant pre-Christian historical site, and it's deeply arrogant and offensive to display it with these tacky images of the current supreme-governor of the English Christian church. I without being insulting, hope people will respect Paganism (and Stonehenge) as much as they do believers in institutional religions.
