STOP Electronic Billboards in Alameda County

STOP Electronic Billboards in Alameda County
The Issue
COMING TO A NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR YOU!........
Alameda County's digital billboards threaten the safety of commuters, environment and energy.
Eden Residents Against Billboard Blight (ERAB)'s primary mission is to stop new digital billboards from blighting the sky of Alameda County & unincorporated area. THERE ARE ALREADY TOO MANY!
Digital billboards threaten driver safety and runs counter to the county’s goal to eliminate traffic fatalities. This county in particular has exceptionally relevant reasons why it needs to care about traffic safety...
Research studies have shown that digital billboards with changing content increase driver distraction over static billboards.
Any proceeds from these billboards would be a tiny fraction of 1% of the County's annual budget; is it worth the tradeoff for more visual blight and an assault on our quality of life?
Furthermore in addition to halting the construction of ANY new electronic billboards, we demand the county REMOVE ALL old-style static billboards with funds already collected from the already existing electronic billboards within the County of Alameda. Enough is enough!
The county must also invest in our Unincorporated Communities without seeking a business "deal" that sacrifices the health, safety and beauty of the Unincorporated community.
The County's relocation "deal" is not the one our community deserves. Like the old advertisement goes, "where's the beef?"
Support the preservation of the view of the SF Bay for travelers of Alameda County, California by telling the county NO! But you must SPEAK UP!
Still on the fence whether to support David versus Goliath? Feast below:
Wildlife disruption
The billboards proposed adjacent to the a landscaped freeway will negatively impact wildlife and the ecosystem, and are opposed by the Audubon Society and the Sierra Club.
Light pollution
The views of the SF Bay and San Bruno mountains would be negatively impacted due to light pollution, similar to the Oakland stadium Jumbotrons. Artificial light also negatively impacts human health.
Energy hogs
Although LEDs by themselves may be energy efficient, these energy intensive billboards require constant cooling and computer systems to operate continuously, and would be giant symbols of disregard for the County’s Climate Smart and Carbon Neutral 2030 policies.
Local businesses do not benefit
Billboards typically advertise national branded consumer products, and only a small unspecified amount of screen time may be devoted to community services.
Litigation threats
Billboard companies are already creating a legal liability for the county. This risk of endless litigation does not appear to be factored into the cost/benefit calculation by county staff.
Overwhelming public opposition
There are many contentious issues but billboards are clearly a public consensus issue when it comes to opposition. People do not want their public resources (views of the bay) destroyed.
What to do: Tell Supervisor Miley NO! NO MORE ELECTRONIC BILLBOARDS in Unincorporated Alameda County.
What to do: Tell Supervisor Haubert NO! NO MORE ELECTRONIC BILLBOARDS in Unincorporated Alameda County.
What to do: Tell Supervisor Carson NO! NO MORE ELECTRONIC BILLBOARDS in Unincorporated Alameda County.
What to do: Tell Supervisor Vallle NO! NO MORE ELECTRONIC BILLBOARDS in Unincorporated Alameda County.
And don't forget to sign *this* petition!
Our scenic freeway views are PROTECTED by state, local and federal law. Law that Alameda County simply wishes to ignore the intent of: the view of the Bay belongs to EVERYONE, not parasitic, greedy, corporate, obtrusive billboard companies. This freeway view (above) does NOT need a distracting screen.
Health, safety, and property value degradation MUST STOP. Alameda County seeks to add electronic billboards into disadvantaged communities while blighting the county for ALL residents. Does this look like an appropriate place for an electronic freeway billboard? This is NOT the Oakland Arena. This is a scenic corridor. This is a community. This is a home.
Let your voice be heard!
