Stop EGRPS from Invading Student Privacy Through Computer Surveillance

Stop EGRPS from Invading Student Privacy Through Computer Surveillance
The Issue
For those of us who are stakeholders of East Grand Rapids Public Schools (EGRPS) - students, parents, or otherwise invested individuals - recent developments have caused concern for student privacy rights. EGRPS has always had an interest in preventing students from gaming during school hours. Initially, this was managed through the use of "CK Authenticator", a system that blocked inappropriate sites. While controversial, this system was not invasive as it only blocked known inappropriate content.
However, without any notice given to students, EGRPS recently installed a new extension: GoGuardian. This extension goes far beyond blocking inappropriate contents - it allows school administrators to remotely observe students' screens whenever they wish. Essentially, this constitutes surveillance invading the privacy of students, happening potentially at any time.
This kind of privacy invasion has serious implications for the mental health and sense of security surrounding our students. Ensuring digital security and privacy is a fundamental aspect of upholding rights in an increasingly interconnected, digital world.
No one should have the power to infringe upon the privacy of students in this manner, especially without transparent communication or the opportunity for informed consent. By signing this petition, you can help us send a strong message to EGRPS that this kind of privacy infringement is unacceptable and must be overturned. Protect the rights and wellbeing of our students - let's put a stop to this unwarranted surveillance.
