Stop Eglinton Avenue West Land Transfer for Transit Oriented Communities

The Issue

I am a resident of Etobicoke, where I have lived for several years, and I am deeply concerned about the recent plan proposed by the Mayor and City Council’s Executive Committee. This plan, which will be discussed on May 13, 2025, involves identifying Transit Oriented Communities along Eglinton Avenue in Etobicoke Centre. The motive seems to be the transfer of City lands to the Province of Ontario for developing new housing under the Transit Oriented Communities program. Though the intention behind such developments might seem beneficial from a broader perspective, it directly impacts those like myself who have made this neighborhood their home. Many residents value the current community structure, and the sense of neighborhood intimacy could be threatened by rapid development and the densification that accompanies such projects. Increased housing development could strain the existing infrastructure which isn’t equipped to handle a sudden surge in population. Local residents are already experiencing traffic congestion, and public amenities are stretched thin. This development risks exacerbating these issues, impacting daily life adversely.
Moreover, the unique character of Etobicoke, cherished by its residents, may face irreversible changes. This transformation, sparked by external entities without direct community input, isn't aligned with the needs or wishes of those who call Etobicoke home. City Council is expected to make its final decision on May 21, 2025. Now is the time to voice our concerns to ensure that our community remains a place we can continue to cherish, live, and grow old in. Urgent action is needed to preserve the integrity and identity of Etobicoke.

I urge fellow residents and concerned citizens to sign this petition. Let the city officials know that our voices matter. Together, we can halt this proposal that doesn't take into account the heart of our community. Sign this petition now to stop the unwarranted transfer of our lands for an ill-conceived Transit Oriented Community plan.
