Stop Egg-Washing: A Call For 'The Happy Egg Co' To Change Their Name

The Issue

We believe 'The Happy Egg Co' is one of the UK's most misleading brand names - and we’re calling on Noble Foods (its owner) to change it.

Why? Because in our view, and based on multiple undercover investigations and expert evidence, the reality of life for the hens in their supply chain bears little resemblance to the idyllic image their name, packaging and marketing suggest.

Their branding is full of sunshine, grassy fields and smiling cartoon hens. But the evidence suggests many of their hens endure overcrowding, stress-related injuries, mutilation, early slaughter and 'beak trimming' (where the end of their beaks are cut off without pain relief, to stop them pecking one another). It's all just not OVERLY happy..

We call this “egg-washing” - using uplifting imagery and language to mask uncomfortable truths about animal suffering. And with 74% of UK adults saying animal welfare affects their shopping habits, we think it’s time that marketing matched reality. We're not campaigning for people not to eat eggs or go vegan - we're campaigning for transparency and honest marketing practices.

Why we believe 'The Happy Egg Co' should change its name:

  • Over 90% of hens in their supply chain undergo beak trimming, a procedure that cuts part of the beak - a nerve-rich organ. It causes acute pain and can cause chronic pain.
  • Investigations have found only two “enrichment” items per 1,000 birds - arguably totally insufficient for meaningful stimulation or welfare.
  • Despite “free range” claims, hens actually spend up to the first 16 weeks of their lives confined indoors, and after that may rarely go outside due to barren, unsheltered outdoor spaces.
  • Happy Egg’s hens are typically slaughtered at just 18 months, though their natural lifespan is 8–10 years. Not the happiest outcome.
  • Marketing materials depict only healthy, fully feathered birds, while investigations suggest injuries, feather loss, and distress are widespread in their farms.
  • In our opinion, the name 'Happy Egg Co' implies superior welfare standards vs other free-range brands. That's not supported by the practices in their supply-chain or the evidence produced from several on-farm investigations by PETA, VIVA and others.

We’ve submitted a formal complaint to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) - one of - or the first, under strengthened consumer protection laws. But public pressure matters too. Help us demand accountability and honest branding.
