Stop ECOWAS from executing planned military action on Niger

Stop ECOWAS from executing planned military action on Niger
The Issue
Niger is a poor country based in West Africa.
On August 10th, 2023, ECOWAS president announced the activation of its standby force for possible action against the Niger Republic Junta, with the aim of restoring constitutional order in the country.
The citizens of Niger, along with the stability of the entire West African region, are directly impacted by the proposed military action. Families, communities, and livelihoods are at risk due to potential collateral damage, displacement, and disruptions caused by armed conflict. Innocent civilians, including women and children, could bear the brunt of the consequences.
The success or failure of this military action has far-reaching implications. If the military intervention proceeds, there's a risk of exacerbating existing tensions, further destabilizing Niger and neighboring nations. Innocent lives could be lost, and the region could experience an influx of refugees, straining resources and deepening the humanitarian crisis. Alternatively, by preventing the military action, ECOWAS has a chance to prioritize diplomatic efforts, promoting a peaceful resolution that would preserve lives, security, and regional stability.
The urgency of immediate action to stop the military action cannot be overstated. Delaying may lead to irreversible consequences, causing a chain reaction of violence and instability that would be difficult to control. If action is taken swiftly, ECOWAS can demonstrate its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, sending a strong message to the international community that diplomacy and cooperation are the preferred means of addressing regional challenges. The timing is crucial to prevent further escalation and to safeguard the lives and well-being of the people of Niger and the entire West African region.
We are calling on the UN, African Union and other international bodies to intervene.
