Stop Drug-Related Homicides: Strengthen Laws and Enforcement

Stop Drug-Related Homicides: Strengthen Laws and Enforcement
The Issue
We, the undersigned, demand justice and accountability for all victims of drug-related deaths. The loss of our loved ones is devastating, and the lack of action from law enforcement and the legal system only adds to our pain.
My son, Tomasso, was a victim of a drug-related death, which is currently under investigation. His case is a heartbreaking example of the system's failures. He was left laying for over 10 hours, struggling to breathe, and was robbed of his valuables, including his identification. A neighbor called for help, but the people with my son claimed to only know him as “Dino,” concealing his identity, despite having his identification card in their possession.
Tomasso fought for his life in a coma and on life support for 10 agonizing days. Due to his prolonged hospitalization, he didn’t receive an autopsy, leaving us with unanswered questions about his death. Furthermore, the hospital didn’t have the resources to test for fentanyl or xylazine, crucial information that could have aided in the investigation.
In the beginning, the investigating officer tried to term his death as “a simple overdose case.” But it was NOT an overdose, and it was NOT simple.
The tragic circumstances surrounding Tomasso’s death are all too common. We must break the silence and demand justice for the countless lives lost to drug-related homicides. Every life matters.
The statistics are staggering: over 100,000 people die from drug overdoses each year, yet only a fraction of those responsible for these deaths have been held accountable. This lack of accountability perpetuates a cycle of violence and destruction, leaving families like mine shattered and without justice.
We urge you to take action to prevent further losses and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. We demand:
- Mandatory investigation of all drug overdoses as potential homicides unless proven accidental
- Deliver targeted training for law enforcement and prosecutors on effectively investigating and prosecuting drug-induced homicide
- Life sentences for drug dealers responsible for a person's death
- Harsher penalties for dealers found guilty of distributing lethal drugs
- Increased funding for law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute these cases
- Accountability for those who fail to act in emergency situations and prioritize profiting over human life
Let's come together to create change and ensure no more families suffer like mine. Sign this petition, share it with your network, and demand justice for all victims of drug-related deaths.
