Stop dog discrimination in our rentals

The Issue

Alberta and British Columbia rentals need to change, if it isn't hard enough to find a rental as it is its even harder to find a home that accepts pets many have made it even harder by discriminating against dog breeds.

Many people including myself have to choose between finding a home and getting rid of our beloved pets. Although there are many pet friendly units within the country over 60% of those units require that your dog be under 40 to 30 lb.

I myself have a great Pyrenees who is loyal, friendly to all, vaccinated and very well behaved. These should be the qualities that landlords should look for when approving a pet, not their size. The negative effects of breed discrimination in rentals is that we cannot find homes for ourselves and our beloved pets as well as the increase of large dogs in shelters across the country, large dogs have a higher chance of not being adopted in a shelter than small dogs we need to take a stand for everyone to be able to keep their pets and not have to choose between homelessness and them.

I am asking that the Albert and BC Rental boards to change section 18 of the Residential Tenancy Act to not allow landlords to deny someone a rental due to having a pet based on size or breed.

If a house, apartment or any other rental says that it is pet friendly for dogs it should mean for all dogs upon approval, not just there breed or size.
