Stop District Maps from Breaking Up Neighborhoods in Pleasant Hill California
The Issue
Councilmembers of the City of Pleasant Hill:
We, the undersigned Pleasant Hill residents and our supporters throughout Contra Costa, write to you today to express our collective voice and advocate for the preservation of neighborhoods and fair representation in the Pleasant Hill community. We are troubled by recent developments surrounding the City Council's proposed ordinance regarding district elections.
It has come to our attention that the City Council intends to designate Map 5 as the default map for district elections; however, a concerning provision within the proposed ordinance would allow the inclusion of 4-district maps on the March 2024 primary ballot. All of the proposed 4-district maps divide neighborhoods and undermine the principles of fair district maps that are vital to our shared goal of fostering unity and cohesion in Pleasant Hill.
We firmly believe that the adoption of Map 5, crafted by a dedicated community member, would maintain the integrity of our neighborhoods and ensure equitable districting.
In light of these concerns, we request your attention and action to address the following:
1. Respect the will of the community by adopting Map 5 as the map for district elections
2. Remove any provisions in the proposed ordinance that allow for the inclusion of 4-district maps on the March ballot.
3. Uphold the principles of fair district maps and prioritize maintaining neighborhood cohesion and communities of interest in district map decisions.
We urge you to consider this petition as a reflection of the collective will of the community. It is our sincere hope that you will act in accordance with our request and do not include language in the districting ordinance that could lead to the ultimate adoption of 4-district map.
