The Issue

Every year, a rally is held in London related to the 1984 Golden Temple events. While peaceful protest is a protected right in the UK, recent demonstrations have included actions that deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community and risk damaging community harmony.

Participants have displayed and dragged effigies of current and former Indian Prime Ministers and used the Indian national flag in disrespectful and inflammatory ways. These acts go far beyond remembrance or peaceful expression. They create distress, provoke hostility, and undermine the respectful environment expected at public gatherings in the UK.

We are not opposing any community’s right to commemorate historical events. Our concern is solely with the violent, degrading, and disrespectful displays

that have become part of this rally.

We call on the UK Government, the Mayor of London, and the Metropolitan Police to:

- Ban the use of violent effigies or degrading portrayals of individuals
- Prohibit the misuse of national flags, including the Indian flag
- Impose stricter conditions on future demonstrations to prevent actions that incite tension
- Ensure that remembrance events remain peaceful, respectful, and non‑provocative

London is a diverse city built on mutual respect. We urge the authorities to protect that spirit by preventing displays that harm community cohesion and disrespect national symbols.
