Stop Discrimination Against Black Women's Natural Hair

Stop Discrimination Against Black Women's Natural Hair
The Issue
In Kennesaw, GA, I frequently endure discrimination based on my natural hair. People often tell me that my hair "needs to get done" or comment that it's "knappy." It's not just hurtful; it's a glaring example of the systemic prejudice deeply embedded in our society. I'm starting this petition because enough is enough. No one should have to feel lesser for embracing their natural beauty.
The prejudice against Black women's natural hair is not just a personal issue; it's a societal one. The texture of Black hair has historically been stigmatized and deemed unprofessional or unkempt, leading to biases not only in social circles but also in workplaces and schools. Studies have shown that Black women are often penalized or face unfair standards in professional settings due to their natural hairstyles. According to a study conducted by Dove and the CROWN Coalition, Black women are 1.5 times more likely than their non-Black counterparts to be sent home from work because of their hair.
We need to raise awareness of this covert form of discrimination and strive for an inclusive environment in our community. It's time for Kennesaw to embrace all forms of beauty and ensure that everyone is treated with the respect they deserve, regardless of their hairstyle.
To combat this issue, I propose implementing anti-discrimination policies that offer protection for natural hairstyles in all public institutions and workplaces in Kennesaw. Such policies have already been introduced in other cities and states, thanks to the CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act, which has been enacted in multiple states across the country. By advocating for similar legislation in Kennesaw, we can set a precedent for respect and equality.
Your support is crucial to bring about this change. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against hair discrimination and helping to create a more inclusive and accepting society for everyone. Let's ensure that no one else has to endure the prejudice that I, and many other Black women, face daily. Please sign and share this petition to help build a better tomorrow for all of us.
