Carterton is facing a significant threat from the proposed housing developments in the Draft Local Plan. It is taking two thirds of the planned new strategic allocations, as well as other housing. This is too much and will double the size of the Town. Other solutions must be found and the allocation to the disconnected Land West of Carterton, in particular should be dropped.

Carterton has undergone significant regeneration recently and is on the up. The prospect of losing the greenfield land to the west of Carterton is profoundly concerning, as it would mean more than just a backward step and losing open space; it would mean losing a vital part of the area’s heritage and undulating and important landscape.

The greenfield land has long served as an essential natural buffer and is home to a well-used ancient public right of way. It is a landscape upheld for its significance by successive Inspectors, serving as a soft, natural boundary for the Town. This area is intrinsic to the identity of Carterton and its neighbouring villages, offering a serene environment for walking, enjoying nature, and fostering community connections. The site includes the only Conservation Target Area and Local Wildlife Sites in the wider area and there is a Site of Special Scientific Interest immediately downstream. Therefore, it is environmentally sensitive.

Furthermore, the impact of this development extends beyond aesthetic loss. The increased number of homes will strain the already burdened infrastructure, worsening traffic congestion and increasing the risk of flooding, both of which are pressing issues that the community currently faces. More households mean more cars on roads and greater strain on drainage systems, heightening existing challenges and undermining our quality of life.

By objecting to the inclusion of new housing on our precious greenfield land, signees are making their voices and pushing for sustainable development plans that respect the distinct character and the natural environment of the area.
