The Issue

The small swamp and meadow that sits next to the scrap yard at the bottom of Ripon Way, Carlton Miniott, Thirsk, has been more than just land to us—it's been our sanctuary, a haven for countless species of wildlife, and a breath of fresh air for generations. Now, this cherished green space faces the threat of a massive development project, proposing 61 new homes on this historical and ecological treasure.

The proposed development, located on a field that has been used as a communal green space for over 45 years, is fraught with issues. The area suffers from seasonal flooding, a concern that is exacerbated by the outdated and inadequate sewerage and drainage systems, which are already causing sewerage problems for residents. An additional 61 homes would not only burden these already strained systems, but also bring an influx of over 100 cars, overwhelming the Ripon Way mini roundabout at the junction with the A61.

Moreover, this area is not just a piece of land—it is a thriving ecosystem. Young oak trees, diverse populations of amphibians, over 20 bird species, and numerous mammals all call this meadow home. They depend on this environment for their survival, and their habitat faces imminent destruction with the impending construction.

Local amenities in Thirsk are already reaching their limits. With the existing infrastructure struggling to meet current demands, further strain from such a substantial development could diminish the quality of life for all residents.

This petition calls for the immediate halt of the planned development on this precious green space. Instead, we advocate for the protection and enhancement of the area's natural beauty and ecological importance. By preserving this land, we not only safeguard wildlife habitats but also maintain the quality of life for future generations in Thirsk. The Environmental Impact Assessment Avant Homes have submitted is hopeless it does not mention what a thriving eco zone this is.

Please lend your voice to protect our environment and heritage by signing this petition today. Let us ensure that Thirsk remains a place where community and nature flourish together.
