The Issue

Environmental Impact: A Greenfield Catastrophe. The proposed Mega 213MW Wester Hermiston data centre is an environmental 'water and energy vampire' that threatens to permanently sterilise the Gogar Special Landscape Area. This industrial sprawl will destroy Grade 2 prime agricultural land and endanger neighbouring ancient woodland vital for biodiversity.

The natural beauty of this area, cherished by locals and visitors alike, risks being overshadowed by industrialisation that encroaches on our green lungs. Once lost, these habitats and landscapes cannot be restored, and the ecological balance they provide will be irreversibly altered for generations.

Grid Hijacking: The planned facility will draw an unprecedented 213 megawatts of continuous power, raising serious energy security concerns. The impact on the local power grid could be detrimental, potentially leading to blackouts or the necessity for expensive grid upgrades that residents and local authorities would be forced to bear.

Water Exploitation: Data centres are known for their immense water consumption, compounding our existing water scarcity issues. The proposed site threatens to become an insatiable user of local water resources, further endangering our environment and adding pressure to an already vulnerable system.

We urge local and national authorities to reconsider the location of this data centre. Alternatives that do not compromise our environmental and energy security exist and should be thoroughly explored. Preserving our green spaces and natural heritage must take precedence.

Sign this petition to protect Wester Hermiston and its surrounding environment from irreversible damage. Our community and future generations depend on it.
