The Issue

Growing up, Harriman State Park was my haven. As someone who has hiked, backpacked, camped, swum, and cherished countless memories in its embrace since childhood, the park is a sanctuary of natural beauty and tranquility. Now, it faces a threat that could permanently alter its landscape.

Recently, the New York State Governor announced a 95.8 million dollar contract to revamp Sebago Beach, located in Harriman State Park. This redevelopment aims to accommodate 4,000 visitors, including parking for 900 cars across three lots, constructing a new 1600-foot promenade along the lake, new restrooms, and a waste station. This sounds impressive, but at what cost?

The construction and expansion for this project will lead to the inevitable destruction of significant portions of our beloved land. The destruction is too high a price for more parking lots and promenades when there is little open land just waiting to be developed. The natural habitat, the serene environment, and the untouched wilderness that provide refuge for wildlife and joy for visitors would be encroached upon, displacing the very essence that makes Harriman State Park special.

We must question whether such a large scale project truly aligns with preserving the natural beauty of one of New York's great treasures. Would it not be wiser to invest in maintaining and improving existing facilities without this drastic transformation that further exploits our natural spaces?

The essence of Harriman State Park is its untamed wilderness, a breathing space away from urban sprawl. By championing alternatives such as shuttle services or renovating existing structures without expanding them, we can protect the environment while still offering the safe public swimming areas we all desire.

Let's take a stand not just for the physical terrain of our park, but for its spirit - for the hikers, the campers, the wildlife photographers, families and children who've learned to appreciate nature's raw allure here.

Join me in urging the New York State government to reconsider the Sebago Beach redevelopment plan in favor of solutions that preserve our precious natural resources. Stand with us to protect Harriman State Park. Sign the petition today to make your voice heard.
