Stop Deportations to War-Torn South Sudan — Especially for Non-Sudanese Nationals
The Issue
The Trump administration is moving forward with deportations to South Sudan, a country currently wracked by war, instability, and humanitarian crisis.
Even more alarming, not all of those being deported are Sudanese nationals — some are refugees and immigrants from other countries who have never lived in South Sudan.
This week, U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy ordered the Trump administration to ‘maintain custody’ of migrants deported to war-torn South Sudan - i.e. not to deport them.
But we know now that the court orders haven't stopped DHS before.
In one reported case, a man from Eritrea is facing deportation to South Sudan simply because of outdated or inaccurate paperwork. Others fear they will be dropped in a conflict zone with no legal ties, no protections, and no way to survive.
This is not just cruel — it’s dangerous and unlawful.
Human rights experts and immigration attorneys warn that deporting non-Sudanese nationals to a war zone violates both U.S. legal standards and international refugee protections.
We call on the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, and the U.S. State Department to immediately halt deportations to South Sudan - follow the Court order you have just received!
Affirm that no person should be deported to a war zone where they face violence, statelessness, or death.
The U.S. must not send people to a country they don’t belong to — especially not during a time of war.
