Stop Denver's budget cuts threatening voter access

Stop Denver's budget cuts threatening voter access
The Issue
In 2026, Denver's election system, known for its national acclaim, stands at risk due to a significant underfunding proposal by Mayor Mike Johnston. Under the current budget recommendation, the Clerk & Recorder's office, the independent agency responsible for elections will see $4.5 million less than what is required to run two high turnout elections in Denver.
This drastic cut to the proposed budget threatens to compromise the integrity, accessibility, and efficiency of our voting system.
The proposed reduction starkly contrasts with the needs of our growing voter base, particularly in light of the anticipated high-turnout elections in 2026. Ensuring every Denverite's voice is heard and accounted for should be our foremost priority. As echoed by Denver Clerk & Recorder Paul López, "You can’t run more elections with fewer resources. Fully funding the Clerk & Recorder’s Office is not about politics — it’s about protecting democracy."
Denver has long been a model for other cities in terms of voter participation and election administration. Cutting the necessary funds not only jeopardizes this reputation but risks disenfranchising thousands of voters. The $200 million budget shortfall within the City and County of Denver, though pressing, should not come at the expense of our democratic processes. In these crucial electoral times, the citizens of Denver deserve a system that is robust, fair, and adequately funded.
We urge City Council to reconsider this budget proposal and allocate the full necessary funding to the Clerk & Recorder's office. By doing so, we preserve the democratic rights of every resident, uphold our city’s reputation, and set a standard for the future.
Protect democracy in Denver! Sign this petition to demand full funding for our elections system.
