The issue

Many local residents fondly remember the historic ‘Old Curiosity Shop’ building at 61 Targo Street, Bundaberg, which holds not just timber, bricks and mortar, but cherished memories and stories passed down through generations. It's more than just a structure; it's a beloved landmark that reflects our community's identity and history. Our ancestors once frequented its predecessor, Victoria Hall and many locals still alive today recall spending hours browsing all kinds of curios in the ‘OCS’. Over time, it has become woven into the fabric of our community.

Despite its proven historical significance and emotional value, Star Hotels Group are moving forward with plans to demolish the remains of this characterful building to pave the way for a 14-bay parking lot. This planned demolition symbolizes the erosion of our community's unique character, replacing it with bland functionality and commercial interest. It's a harsh reminder of how easily history can be swapped for profit and how fragile our heritage truly is.

Preserving our heritage requires intentional efforts and demolition should always be the last resort. Instead, the building can be repurposed and reintegrated into new developmental plans. Restoration and adaptive reuse not only protect our history but also boost the local economy by promoting tourism, providing jobs, plus sustaining the unique identity of our neighbourhood. By saving this building, we can tap into heritage tourism potential, draw visitors, and keep our history alive.

We strongly urge Star Hotels Group to explore feasible alternatives to demolition, such as using the Council-approved Woongarra Street access as the sole vehicular access to the redevelopment site.

Sign this petition now to show your support for saving our beloved historic building and to ensure that it remains a cherished part of our community for future generations to enjoy. We have the power to shape our community's landscape while preserving its soul!
