The Issue

My heart is broken. My brother was left lying on the floor of a South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) facility for hours without receiving the medical care he desperately needed. Tragically, this delay contributed to his untimely death. My family's loss is irreparable, but the pain is made worse by the knowledge that this was preventable. It is time for us to demand change and ensure that no inmate is ever denied or delayed the medical attention they need.

Every human being, regardless of their circumstances, deserves access to timely and adequate healthcare. Inmates under the care of the SCDC are no exception. Yet, countless stories similar to mine have surfaced, revealing a serious systemic issue within the state's correctional facilities. This neglect not only violates basic human rights but can also lead to fatal outcomes, as in the case of my brother.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections oversees the welfare of thousands of inmates, many of whom require medical attention ranging from routine check-ups to emergency interventions. However, the lack of timely care is endangering their lives and disregarding their dignity as human beings. Delays in medical care can exacerbate illnesses and lead to unnecessary suffering and even death.

We call upon the South Carolina Department of Corrections, state legislators, and relevant healthcare providers operating within these facilities to address this urgent issue. Concrete actions must be implemented:

1. Increase the number of medical staff in prisons to ensure prompt attention for all inmates.
2. Establish clear and strictly adhered to protocols for emergency medical situations.
3. Conduct regular audits and oversight to ensure compliance with healthcare standards in all correctional facilities.
4. Provide mandatory training for correctional officers to identify and respond to medical emergencies with urgency and compassion.

These steps are critical to upholding the dignity and rights of inmates and preventing further tragedies. It's a matter of life and death, and we cannot afford complacency.

By signing this petition, you are standing with me and countless others who believe in justice and dignity for all. Together, we can push for essential reforms and pressure those in power to ensure that no family has to experience the heartbreak and loss that mine has endured. Sign this petition today to demand immediate action and change in the healthcare standards for inmates in South Carolina correctional facilities.
