The Issue

As  local residents, we have first witnessed the massive deforestations by the real estate development companies that has been happening the recent few years and continues on in Charlotte areas and suburbs. They would need to leave green buffers for greenery, noise protection and shade , alongside of the roads.

We need to plant thousands of trees to combat the summer heat.  Old trees and forests contribute to our community healthy environment, respiratory, immune and mental health and wellbeing require to be protected as a good practice.

Forests purify the air we breathe by acting as a natural filter for pollutants, thus playing a crucial role in public health. They release stress, being of great benefit for mental wellbeing.

Moreover, the benefits of forests go far beyond temperature control. Forests represent space for spiritual retreat and meditation. they enrich our souls and heal us emotionally and mentally.

The state authorities and corporations need to be more concerned with our green environment, and provide more incentives to preserve forests . The local authorities should use research to find  better solutions to sustainably make up new space for housing .

The City needs to host forums with national and international experts to find solutions for green housing and green roads .There are many solutions and we should not use the easiest- destroying the green environment. Any development that sacrifices greenery is not benefitting the overall nature, human and animal wellbeing and coolness.

Loss of trees has a direct correlation with high temperatures that can harm our health and increase local heatwaves' frequency and intensity. More concrete by contrary will cause more heat.

The forests that are privately owned, still represent a  community asset , and instead of being protected for our environmental health , climate preservation and air quality are left unregulated and unprotected.

Forests that in the past  surrounded us and formed the green resource of our city are disappearing fast. This disheartening phenomena not only is rising the environment temperatures but also will affect air quality, greenery and our local  beauty and biodiversity. As the trees come down, temperatures go up.

Trees are potent combatants of climate change, sequestering large amounts of carbon. When they are felled, all the stored carbon gets released back into the atmosphere, causing a spike in temperatures.

The removal of these vital natural resources increases air pollution, causes millions of premature deaths worldwide annually.

Regrettably, state and city policymakers have not adequately addressed this pressing concern, allowing deforestation to rage on without proper checks and balances.

We respectfully ask Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation, in collaboration with the Catawba Lands Conservancy and the North Carolina Land and Water Fund, to consider acquiring or protecting privately owned forest land—especially areas with mature pine and hardwood trees—so they can become community green spaces for recreation and wellbeing. Protecting these natural areas now will preserve clean air, water, and biodiversity for future generations while giving residents restorative places for peace, connection, and health.

Also the Bible encourages humans to care for creation, not exploit it, and to see trees as more than resources—they are part of God’s living temple (Deuteronomy 20:19 :“When you lay siege to a city  do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, . Do not cut them down. ”Deuteronomy 20:19 “On each side of the river stood the tree of life… And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:2 :“Let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.” Psalm 96:12

While these forests might be privately owned, they serve a community function as an indispensable environmental asset. Their uncontrolled loss significantly impacts not just our community, but it is a national concern.
The urgent need for the hour is stringent regulations on deforestation of private lands and protective zoning policies for our forested areas and a more conscientious approach towards urban development.

We ask the citizens of North Carolina, the Charlotte area, and its suburbs to stand against reckless deforestation for the sake of our environment, climate, public health, and future generations.
